Substance Use Disorder

The most common substances abused by pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are alcohol, illicit drugs and prescription pain medications. Additionally, opioid use and abuse is rising among pregnant women.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) may be recommended to address an opioid use disorder. MAT is recommended for pregnant women with an opioid use disorder to improve birth outcomes. In some circumstances MAT can be compatible with breastfeeding.
