Sore nipples are the most frequent complaint of mothers. There are several reasons why a mother may have sore or painful nipples.
When the integrity of nipple tissue is disrupted, the risk of infection increases. It is important to manage this immediately as severe trauma to the nipple can result in spontaneous episodic pain and vasospasm. Painful persistent sore nipples have been linked to postpartum depression, so immediate care and attention is imperative.
