Induced lactation is the initiation of a milk supply in a woman whose lactation is not driven by hormones from a pregnancy. This is most often done with adoption or when the birth mother is not available.
Relactation is the re-establishment of a woman’s milk supply after lactation has ended. Reasons for relactation may include:
- Unintended weaning.
- A sick or premature baby.
- A baby that does not tolerate formula.
- A change in the mother’s previous decision to wean.
